The Holy Mass was led by Archbishop Philip Anyolo, and concelebrated by the Auxiliary Bishop David Kamau, Archbishop Emeritus John Cardinal Njue, and numerous Priests.
In the homily, Bishop Kamau remembered the life of Cardinal Otunga as one of humility, natural faith, gifts of administration, leadership, and love for family, Christians, and priests. He also recalled him as a leader of unity, peace, and reconciliation. “Whatever your gift is, do it cheerfully and do not give up, just as Cardinal Otunga taught us,” he said. As the church commemorates the departed prelate, Archbishop Anyolo has written a letter to the faithful of the Archdiocese of Nairobi and all persons of good will urging them to pray fervently for the success of the process. In the epistle dated August 7, 2023, the Nairobi Metropolitan states that though the process is now in the Roman phase, “the beatification and canonisation of the Servant of God is still work in progress … and the process belongs to us”.
