Twenty students from the Catholic University of Eastern Africa, CUEA have benefitted from the Cardinal Otunga Scholarship/Bursary Fund, operated by the University for the poor students.
Established in 2005, the Fund is in honor of His Eminence Maurice Michael Cardinal Otunga, who passed on September 6, 2003 and was the University’s first Chancellor.
The availed bursaries cover the 2014/2015 period.
Announcing this at the September 5, 2014 Cardinal Otunga annual lecture/Fund raising drive, held at the Holy Family Minor Basilica large , Nairobi , CUEA Vice Chancellor Msgr Dr Pius Rutechura urged the beneficiaries of the Fund to ensure that they took their studies seriously.
He said the move would underline the importance of the Fund to both the individuals and the society in general.
He added that our Cardinal had great concern for education; hence the University has instituted this Fund in his honor.
During the occasion, Msgr Rutechura helped toraise more than KSHs. 800,000 for the Otunga’s 2014/2015 bursary scheme.
He thanked all those who had contributed towards the Fund.
He called for more contributors towards the Fund, observing that, “The more money we get the more students will benefit from it.”
Delivering a lecture, entitled: Servants’ Leadership of Cardinal Otunga, Bishop Paul Kariuki of Embu Diocese urged the faithful to constantly offer prayers to the soul of Cardinal Otunga, whom the Church has declared as the Servant of God.
“The task ahead of us, Cardinal Otunga’s beatification process demands that each one of us should be committed to prayers for the success of the process. We are also called upon to commit ourselves to the financial support of the process,” emphasized Bishop Kariuki.
